about

It’s been nearly three years since Pushing Giants released their self-titled EP. Half of them were spent playing in clubs across their home of Baltimore, and the other half they spent sequestered away in various home studios, recording what would become their first full-length album, “Automagic Mathmagician,” released on May 27, 2016.

One major change from their last recording is the addition of full-time bass player Theo Kavouras, who also shared in the engineering duties. Otherwise, the lineup remains the same; songs and vocals are provided by Devon O’Hara with the percussion coming from Matt Griffen, and guitar and other assorted instruments played by Matthew Brown.

While “Pushing Giants” was recorded almost entirely live in 36 hours of studio time, the “Automagic Mathmagician” sessions took over a year. This protracted gestation produced a 40-minute record with a sound totally different than their debut EP, and mastering by AUDIOSIEGE retains and emphasizes the high dynamic range of the album.

Although delayed by creative disagreements and schedule conflicts, the record features more acoustic instrumentation (“Poor Land”) and synthesizers (“Don’t Die”) as well as samples created by the band (“Hot Rod”), in a marked departure from their blues-rock roots. Overall, "Automagic Mathmagician" illustrates the tremendous distance that the band has covered in four years of making music, finally arriving at a sound they can call their own.
